Oknyebong Beacon Mound

It’s an unfortunate truth that many foreign visitors to Korea don’t get to see the numerous beautiful spots located throughout the country.

The Oknyeobong Peak in Ganggyeong, Nonsan, South Korea, is one such place.

The peak itself is not particularly high, but it does offer some great views of the surrounding areas and is a great place to watch the sunset.

At the top is the beacon mound. It was part of an ancient Korean fire-signal system used to transmit important military and political information across the peninsula to the capital during the Joseon Dynasty.

From here you can see the river below and the surrounding countryside.

The site in Nonsan is part of the well-maintained Ganggyeong Oknyeobong Park and contains some other great treats.

Located just below the peak is a small museum dedicated to the Korean writer, Park Bumshin. The exhibits are all in Korean, but it was very peaceful there.

At the base of the peak is a park with some truly lovely walking areas.

I shouldn’t forget to mention that near the mound is a tiny little coffee/snack place run by this very sweet old lady.

If you can, stick around for sunset. Its beautiful and peaceful to witness.
